SOUTH BEND - Alice F. Botka, 84, is survived by her husband, Richard L. Botka, daughter, Denise Botka, son, Dennis (Sandra) Botka, grandchildren, Emily (Jim) Matz, Lisa and Louis Botka, Stephanie and Sean Foreman; and great grandchildren, Payton and Sylvia Matz. Visitation will be from 2-4 & 6-8 pm Monday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Dr. where a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 3:30 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 am Tuesday in Holy Cross Catholic Church.

SOUTH BEND - Alice F. Botka, 84, of South Bend, Indiana passed away Thursday, August 25, 2011, in Memorial Hospital of South Bend. Alice was born September 29, 1926, in South Bend, Indiana, to Francis "Frank" and Hattie (Rzycha) Barczykowski. Alice was a clerk with the Notre Dame Hesburgh Library for 17 years, retiring in 1989. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1985 and underwent a mastectomy and chemotherapy. She was cancer free until 2007 when it was found to have metastasized to her bones. In the past several months she had been undergoing a rigorous treatment of chemotherapy and radiation. On June 14, 1947, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in South Bend, Alice married Richard L. Botka, who survives. Surviving with her husband of 64 years are her children, Denise Botka of South Bend, Indiana, Dennis (Sandra) Botka of South Bend, Indiana; grandchildren, Emily (Jim) Matz, Lisa Botka, Louis Botka, Stephanie Foreman, Sean Foreman; and great-grandchildren, Payton and Sylvia Matz. She was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers. Alice graduated in 1944 from South Bend Catholic High School, was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, the Rosary Altar Society, and Harvest House of Holy Cross Parish. She was also a perpetual member of the Miraculous Medal Association, St. Anthony's Guild, and the St. Jude League. Alice was an avid reader, an encyclopedia of information, a sports enthusiast, and a fierce competitor of all types of card games, especially euchre and pinochle. Alice was generous beyond word, and strongly devoted to her family and delighted in caring for her great-granddaughter every week. Visitation will be held from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Monday, August 29, 2011, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 30, 2011, in Holy Cross Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
