SOUTH BEND - Joseph Anthony Lazzara 94, of South Bend, IN passed away while surrounded by family on December 1, 2016.He was born February 2, 1922 in Vincennes, IN to Charles and Margaret (Dattilo) Lazzara, each of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Salvator Lazzara, and sisters, Mary Lazzara and Anne Kovas. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Shirley (Elliott); sister Terese Binder; six children, Thomas (Jan) Lazzara, Suzanne (Mark) Wiwi, Charles (Lynn) Lazzara, John (Lynn) Lazzara, Mary (Gig) Young, and Joseph (Kathy) Lazzara; grandchildren, Christopher (Amy) Wiwi, Betsy (Carson) McCaw, Nicholas (Molly) Lazzara, Thomas (Whitney) Lazzara, Charles (Angela) Lazzara, Drew Lazzara, Kelle (John) Hennessee, Casey Lazzara, Alex Lazzara, Nicholas Young, Michelle (Jimmy) Brown, Jordan Young, Anthony Lazzara, Sarah Young, Max Lazzara, JT Lazzara, and Hank Lazzara; and thirteen great-grandchildren. Joe attended Central Catholic High School where he played both basketball and football. He was named captain of the football team and earned the MVP award. After graduating in 1941, he began working for Sibley Machine and Foundry. While there, he was active with the National American Foundryman's Society and the local Michiana Chapter. He was appointed Chairman of the local chapter in 1972 and appointed to the National Board of Directors in 1981. He retired as Sales Manager, Foundry Division, in 1988. On September 29, 1945, Joe married the love of his life, Shirley Elliott, at St. Joseph Church in South Bend. Together, they raised and educated six wonderful children. They celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary in 2016. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a life member of the South Bend Elks #235, where he received the Grand Exalted Rulers Commendation Award (1995-1996) and the Elk of the Year Award for the South Bend Lodge (1996-1997). Joe was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church since 1936. He served as an usher at the 10:00 AM mass for many years. He was an ardent supporter of Notre Dame Football, holding season tickets for over fifty years. He also held season tickets for men's and women's basketball. Joe was an avid Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees fan. He enjoyed playing golf and cards with friends and family. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Monday, December 5, 2016 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 226 N. Hill Street, in South Bend. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 12:00 PM, immediately following the visitation. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Grade School benefiting the Athletic and Technology Programs. The address for the school is 216 N.
