Obituary for Susan M. King Newcomer
ELKHART- Susan Maria King Newcomer, 78, of Elkhart, passed away Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at her daughter’s residence. She was born August 5, 1939 in Elkhart to William F. and Gwendolyn B. (Martin) Dreves.She married Roger King in 1956 and later married Robert “Bob” Newcomer on May 27, 2000. In addition to her husband Bob, other survivors include her son, Michael (Cynthia) King; daughter, Gwendolyn (George) Kijak; step-son, Jeffrey (Julie) Newcomer; step-daughter, Julie (Mike Edmonds) Phillips; two sisters, Patricia (Ryan) Hankey and Sue Ann Moseng; brother, Jerry (Charlene) Hay; grandchildren, Kristopher (Megan) Briggs, Nicholas Briggs, Erin (Tony) Carroll, Brandon (Maryori) King, Matthew, Andrew and Hannah Newcomer, Preston and Payton Phillips; nine great-grandchildren. The family wishes to mention her best friends for her entire life, Judith Lantry, Penny Gillespie and the late Father George Minix. Her caregivers who were extraordinarily gentle, kind and compassionate, Cathryn, Thoko, Melissa, Fuyiwe and Amala. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, James Hay. Susan worked in the field of rehabilitation including working with senators and congressmen on legislative practices for employment of the disabled in the workplace. She also worked as a designer and decorator in the modular housing industry. She enjoyed involvement with church, family and friends. Weekend sleepovers with grandkids were very special. Out of town guests were always welcomed and enjoyed. Family get-togethers and boating were a large part of summer. She delighted in her flower gardens, her dogs and singing in the church choir.The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the 9:00 AM Requiem Mass on Saturday, October 7th at St. David’s Episcopal Church, 26824 County Road 4, Elkhart. Father Joshua Nelson will officiate. Interment will follow in Olive West Cemetery. A celebration of her life will be held from 2:00 until 5:00 PM on Saturday, October 7th at Christiana Creek Country Club. Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home, 700 East Jackson Blvd., Elkhart, is entrusted with her arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to St. David’s Episcopal Church or the Humane Society of Elkhart County in memory of Susan.
