LAPORTE - Josephine R. Spicka, 91, South Bend, formerly of LaPorte, passed away peacefully at 12:29 pm (EST) Thursday, October 31, 2013, at her residence with her family at her bedside. She was born February 17, 1922, in LaPorte, to Walter and Agnes (Wojtowicz) Cichon. She was a surgical nurse at Fairview Hospital and later became Director of Nursing there. She worked for two local physicians as their head nurse. She was the administrator of Health Care Benefits for McGill Manufacturing in Valparaiso, Indiana, and retired from LaPorte County Health Department as a nurse in April 2010. She was a practicing nurse for 66 years. On September 15, 1945, in Sacred Heart Church, LaPorte, she married Clement A. Spicka, who preceded her in death on December 14, 1976. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, a 1939 graduate of LaPorte High School, a 1944 graduate of The Cook County School of Nursing. Member of Indiana State Nurses Association, Sacred Heart Altar and Rosary Society, P.N.A. Polish National Alliance. She loved nature and her pets. Everyone who knew her knows how she touched their lives in many ways. She leaves behind one daughter, Patti (Tom) Walz, South Bend, IN; one son, Tom (Lynne) Spicka, Monticello, IN; seven grandchildren, Angelique Headdy, Patricia (Erik) Scott, Tommy Spicka, Tommy Walz, Lindsey (Bret) Forsyth, Kelsey (Tommy) Buysse and Corey Walz. Seven great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, one great-granddaughter, two sisters, Jean Stachoviak and Phyllis Klodzinski, & four brothers, Joseph, Stanley, Louie and Edward Cichon. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 am (CST) Monday, November 4, 2013, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, LaPorte, with Rev Ian Williams and Rev John Delaney officiating. Visitation will be from 2-6 pm (CST) today, Nov. 3, 2013, and Monday 8:30-9:30 (CST) am at Essling Funeral Home. A Rosary will be at 3:00 pm (CST) today at the funeral home. Burial will follow the Mass at Pine Lake Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to LaPorte County Small Animal Shelter, 2855 W St Rd 2, LaPorte, IN 46350; or St Joseph County Humane Society, 2506 Grape Road, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
