Known as Roy. From the age of nine, worked on the Virgil Greer farm for room and keep. He attended school through the sixth grade. As a young man, he worked as a power plant engineer in Elkhart and Mishawaka, IN and eventually became a precision machinist with The Bendix Corporation in South Bend. Also as a young man, he played as a catcher for a semi-professional baseball team in Elkhart. Died of a cerebral hemorrhage.
