NEW CARLISLE - August H. Cooreman, 95, of South Bend, passed Sunday in Hamilton Grove, New Carlisle. He was born October 8, 1915, in Tracy, MN, to the late Judoc and Helena (Verplaetse) Cooreman.
On February 22, 1941, he married Esther "Pat" Jozwiak, who preceded him in death in 1981. Along with his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Landuyt; and by four brothers, Marcell, Steve, Paul and Henry Cooreman. August is survived by his daughter, Carol (Thomas) Zemrowski of Kalamazoo, MI; his son, Dan Cooreman of New York, NY; two grandchildren, Laura (Curt) Korten and Paula (Jeremy) Miller; and by two-great grandchildren, Jerome Korten and Athena Miller. Mr. Cooreman was an area farmer and was a St. Joseph County Commissioner and County Recorder, a member of the Warren Township Advisory Board and a former Real Estate Agent. He was a parishioner of St. Pius X Catholic Church, Granger and a former parishioner of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, South Bend and St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church, New Carlisle. August was a Charter member of the Lydick Lions Club and a member of Volkskring Club, Mishawaka, West Side Democratic Club, South Bend and many other Democratic Clubs in the area. He was also a member of MR Falcons, Serra Club, The Knights of Columbus and the former Moose Lodge #58 of South Bend. He was an avid Notre Dame fan and was a season ticket holder for both the football and basketball teams. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 pm Wednesday August 24, 2011, in Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, and from 9 to 10 am Thursday August 25, 2011 in St. Pius X Catholic Church, Granger. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 am in the church, with entombment to follow in Highland Cemetery, South Bend. Memorial contributions may be made to the August and Esther Cooreman Scholarship Fund at Butler University, 46th St. and Sunset, Indianapolis, IN 46208.
