George J. Ornat, 87, of 305 S. Meade, died at 10 p.m. Tuesday in St. Josephs Medical Center after a brief illness. He was retired in 1966 from the Bendix Corp. after 23 years of service. He was born on April 19, 1895, in Poland, and lived in South Bend for 85 years, coming from Poland. In 1916, in South Bend, he married Theresa Michalski. She died in 1934. Then on Dec. 1, 1939, he married Vera Jaronik and she died on Jan. 4, 1982. He is survived by three sons, Harry and Sylvester, both of South Bend, and Al of Miami, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Henrietta Roose of South Bend; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Marys Polish National Catholic Church, with Rev. Edwin E. Phillips, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the St. Joseph Funeral Home where a parish rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. He was a member of UAW Local 9 and the South Bend-Liberty Pigeon Club.
