Patrick F. O’Malley
4/19/1935 - March 30, 2022
Patrick F. O’Malley, 86, residing in Granger, IN, passed away on Tuesday, March 29, 2022, in his home with his family around him. He was born on April 19, 1935, in Galway, Ireland to the late Conor and Sarah (Joyce) O’Malley. Patrick came to the United States in 1960 to attend UCLA for ophthalmology training. After completing his residency in retinal surgery at Mass Eye & Ear Hospital in Boston, Patrick moved to the South Bend area in 1967, where he was a devoted physician, who cared deeply for his patients, until retiring in 2005. Patrick was a unique and beautiful soul. He was a devoted husband and father to his five sons. Despite his busy schedule, he dedicated his evenings and weekends to shuttle his sons to hockey practice, skiing, and countless other activities. And during those car rides and at the kitchen table, he recounted hilarious stories of his adventures and misadventure in the wild west of Connemara, Ireland. He imbued this sense of adventure in his children. While the elaborate swings and ziplines, that he built for them and their friends, might raise a few eyebrows in today’s safety-first culture, they were the basis of many fond memories for family and friends. He was always curious. Archeology, astronomy and photography being foremost in his interests, though his inquisitive mind appreciated many topics and fields. He was incredibly funny with a razor-sharp wit and while he liked to give a bit of gentle ribbing, he was such a gentle soul that no one could ever take offense. He was a deeply religious man, very active in St. Pius X Catholic Church, where he regularly attended Bible study. But mostly, he was a gentleman. He cared for others, always watching out for someone who might need some help or encouragement, and he never expected, or really wanted, anyone to know except for those he reached out to. He will be dearly missed. On August 19, 1963, in California, Patrick married the former Imelda Cullen, who survives. In addition to his loving wife of 58 years, he is survived by five sons, Conor (Nancy) O’Malley of Algonquin, IL; Brendan (Becky) O’Malley of Santa Monica, CA; Brian (Lisa) O’Malley of Rolling Hills Estates, CA; Ronan (Zhuzhu) O’Malley of San Diego, CA; Patrick (Steffi) O’Malley of Longmont, CO; and ten grandchildren, Verena, Katie, Patrick, Owen, Aaron, Sarah, Andreas, Katja, Isabel and Fiona; as well as one sister, Ann Kelly of Ireland. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Joan Ringrose and Grace O’Hara; and one brother, Conor O’Malley. Mass of Christian Burial and graveside services will be celebrated at a to-be-determined time at St. Pius X Catholic Church and St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Dr. Patrick O’Malley may be donated to Catholic Relief Services, P.O. Box 17090, Baltimore, MD 21297; or St. Vincent DePaul Society, 520 Crescent Avenue, South Bend, IN 46617; or a charity of your choice.
