[N3949] Ernest S. Cukrowicz
May 30, 1925 - Dec. 5, 2011
SOUTH BEND - Ernest S. Cukrowicz, 86, passed away at 5:30 a.m. on Monday, December 5, 2011, in the Center for Hospice. Ernest was born on May 30, 1925, to the Late Harry & Helen Cukrowicz. In 1954 he married Dorothy L. Cukrowicz, who preceded him in death in 2002. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Ben, and his sister, Alice. He is survived by his brother, Ray Cukrowicz; his stepdaughter and caretaker for many years, Linda Lamar, several nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. Ernest was a lifelong resident of South Bend, where he attended St. Stanislaus Grade School and Central High School. He was drafted into the Army and served in the Korean War. After returning from the war he met and married the love of his life, Dorothy. He then attended Acme School of Tool & Design and spent his life as a Tool & Die Designer working for several local companies, the last being Adams Engineering. Ernest looked forward to meeting his former grade school friends for lunch (the class of 1940 from St. Stanislaus) and he met regularly with his co-workers from Adams Engineering. He was very actively involved in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Golden Hill Post 8748 and was an officer for over 60 years. He continued his service even until his death. Ernest was also a member of American Legion Post #357. He was a Notre Dame and Cubs fan. He loved his dog Molly and was with her until the end of his life; she will miss him terribly. Ernest requested that there be no service but that friends join in a celebration of his life that will be held on Sunday, December 11, 2011, from 3:00 to 5:00 at American Legion Post 357, 5414 W. Sample St., South Bend, where dinner will be served. Contributions in memory of Ernest may be made to VFW 8748, 718 N. Johnson St., South Bend; to The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend; to Midwest Dachshund Rescue, 8073 Stonegate Drive, Tinley Park, IL 60487; or to St. Stanislaus Church on Brookfield where he was a parishioner for many years.
