The passing of Mrs Sarah Hygema, 76, occurred Thursday morning, October 24 at her home in Madison township. She had been ailing with diabetes for several years, but her condition became serious two weeks ago. Mrs Hygema was born August 19, 1864 in this vicinity, the daughter of William and Martha Ann Rinebold Loucks. She was married on February 4, 1885, to Mr Hygema, who was fatally injured on February 23, last, in an auto collision, 2 1/2 miles southeast of the Hygema home. Surviving are two sons, the Rev William Hygema of Dayton, O, and Irvin Hygema of Lakeville; four daughters, Mrs Irvin Wise and Mrs Joseph Ummel of vicinity, Mrs Charles F. Weldy, who lives on the Hygema farm, and Miss Grace Hygema, at home; 21 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren, and three sisters, Mrs Emmaline Wise and Mrs Edward Abbiehl of Nappanee and Mrs John Eversole of South Bend. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 at the Wakarusa Mennonite Brethren in Christ church, following a short service at the home at 1:30. The Rev L L Rassi of Nappanee and the Rev H E Miller of Elkhart officiated. Burial was made in South Union cemetery.
