Shirley A. Mynsberge
Sept. 10, 1928 - Feb. 5, 2021
SOUTH BEND, IN - Shirley, 92, was preceded by her husband of 52 years, Alphons Mynsberge & is survived by five children, John (Nola), Patrick (Patty), & Scott (Sharon) Mynsberge, Jeanne Huguenard, and Lori (Joe) Fillenwarth; 10 grandchildren: Alison & Fred (Melissa) Mynsberge, Mallory (Brian) Beightol & Sam (Lauren) Mynsberge; Nick, Jordan, & Evan (Breann) Mynsberge, Chelsea (Nate) Conly, Kelly & Kyle (Meredith) Huguenard, plus nine great-grandchildren. Shirley was always very busy. She grew up in South Bend & graduated Nursing School at Memorial Hospital. During her 30+ year nursing career, she worked at several area hospitals, did visiting nursing, & ended in Industrial Nursing at American Motors. She served as President of the IN Industrial Nurses Assoc., organizing & raising funds for annual conventions in Indianapolis. Shirley was active at Coalbush United Methodist Church, Mishawaka, & particularly enjoyed cooking & baking for fund raisers & for the church Youth Group. Shirley was a great cook, even better baker, & proficient at canning, freezing, & preserving the produce from Alphons' large garden, fruit trees & grapevines. Fresh apple pies were baked daily throughout summer & were everyone's favorite. In winter, Shirley always baked a cake or pies for the big Sunday dinner that always followed church. With a bit of free time & space available when a couple kids went off to college, Shirley & Alphons began hosting high school exchange students with Youth for Understanding & later became area Reps for the program. They hold a record with YFU for hosting the most students…13 who lived with us long term & many more passing thru. Later Shirley & Al hosted students at IUSB & ND, including Russian scientists sent by Gorbachev in exchange for ours sent to the USSR. Shirley & Al were able to travel the world visiting past students in their home countries & we, their children, are blessed with the continuing friendships of our students, their friends & families. God Bless you Mom for giving us wonderful full lives. We will remember you always. Until we meet again…Published in South Bend Tribune on Feb. 28, 2021.
