South Bend Tribune, Mon., July 31, 1944, section 2, p. 1:
"Private Edwin J. Stachowski, aged 39, 1119 West Ford Street, was killed in action in France on July 2 (sic), according to word received Sunday by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Stachowski, 1119 West Ford street. Death came on his mother's birthday. He wrote his last letter home when he landed in France of June 23. Private Stachowski was drafted in November 1942, and after training at Camp Atterbury, Ind., and Camp Breckenridge, Ky., was sent to England last April. "He was born in South Bend May 29, 1905, graduated from St. Casimir's parochial school in 1918 and attended Central High School for three years. He had been employed at the Bendix Aviation Corporation plant prior to induction. He had been active in the Young People's Progress Club of St. Casimir's parish. On June 30, 1936, he was married to Miss Bertha VanWynsberghe, who survives. Also surviving are a son, James Joseph, six; two sisters, Miss Dorothy Stachowski and Mrs. Henrietta Thompson, all of South Bend, and two brothers, Sylvester Stachowski, of South Bend, and Harry Stachowski, of Detroit MI.
"A memorial Mass for the repose of his soul will be said soon in St Casimir's Church .”
South Bend Tribune, Wed., May 19, 1948, section 3, p. 8:
“The body of Private Edwin J. Stachowski, 1119 West Ford street, who was killed in the fighting at St. Lo, France, July 1, 1944, will be returned to South Bend Thursday for reinterment here. Friends may call in the Kaniewski & Son funeral home after 2 p. m. Thursday and until funeral services at 10 a. m. Saturday in St. Casimer’s Catholic church. Burial will be in Cedar Grove cemetery. Members of the M. R. Falcons will be the pallbearers. The Disabled American War Veterans will conduct military services."
