ELKHART, Ind. - Larry Zavatsky, 62, died at 9:40 p.m. Saturday at Elkhart General Hospital due to complications of leukemia. He was born May 21, 1944, in South Bend, to Harry and Gertrude (Kornfeld) Zavatsky. On Sept. 3, 1965, he married Heidi K. Houston in South Bend. He was a 1962 graduate of Elkhart High School and graduated from Indiana University, Bloomington, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity. He owned and operated James Madison Furniture stripping and refinishing in Elkhart since 1976. He was a member of Temple Beth El, past president of Temple Israel, Elkhart and was active in the Boy Scout organization for many years. He is survived by his wife; daughter Jennifer Zavatsky, Hillsboro, Ore.; a son, Capt. Jeffrey J. Zavatsky, Summerland Key, Fla.; his parents, Elkhart; and a brother, Allen (Donna) Zavatsky, Elkhart. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home, Elkhart, with the Rabbi Michale Freidland officiating. Burial will be in Beth Shalom in Rice Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Tempel Beth El, Sinai Synagogue or Leukemia Foundation.
