Modest Torzewski

SOUTH BEND - Modest Torzewski 92, passed away Thursday at Healthwin. Surviving are two daughters, Diana (Jeff) Morris, of Webster Groves, MO, and Rebecca (Gordon) Martinczak of South Bend. Five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Monday at Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church with burial to follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call in the Zahoran Funeral Home 1826 Kemble Avenue from 4-8 PM Sunday.

Modest S. Torzewski

SOUTH BEND - Modest S. Torzewski, 92, passed away at 1:05 PM on Thursday, November 4th, in the Healthwin Specialized Care Facility. Modest was born on January 22, 1918, in South Bend, IN, to Stanley and Bernice Torzewski. On May 17, 1941, in South Bend, IN, he married Velma Szabo, who preceded him in death. Modest and Velma were married 66 years and Modest cared for Velma for several years until her death in 2007. Modest is survived by two daughters, Diana (Jeff) Morris of Webster Grove, MO, and Rebecca (Gordon) Martinczak of South Bend, IN; five grandchildren, Mike (Kristi) Morris, Shannon Morris, Kelly, Paul and Kimberly Martinczak; and two great-grandchildren, Michael and Madeline Morris. He is also survived by his brother, Jerome Torzewski; and several nieces and nephews. Modest was preceded in death by two brothers, Dan and Alvin Torzewski, and two sisters, Monica Peak and Virginia Szymczak. Family was important to Modest. He loved all of his family dearly. Modest spent three years in the Navy during WW ll, serving in the Pacific Theater on the USS Metcalf Destroyer. He was engaged in several naval battles in the Pacific arena. After WW II, Modest was employed by South Bend Toy (one of the first manufacturers in South Bend) for 45 years and worked for South Bend Toy until it closed. He was the last employee for South Bend Toy. After his retirement, he was active as a volunteer for Memorial Hospital. Modest was a member of Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church for 65 years and a member of the German Club for 70 years. Modest loved Notre Dame football, attended all home games for decades, never missing a game. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church. The family would like to thank Mitchell's Country Care and Healthwin Specialized Care for the loving care and comfort given to our dear dad. We also thank the US Veterans Administration for their assistance given to our dad. We love you, Pop; you will be missed. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 8th, at 10 AM in Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery.
