MISHAWAKA - Sophia F. (Chwalek) Martynowicz, 94, formerly of South Bend, IN, passed away on Friday, May 30, 2008, in her home surrounded by her family and loved ones. Sophia was born on February 19, 1914, in LaPorte, IN, to the late Michael and Frances Chwalek. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore "Ted" Martynowicz; sisters, Carrie (Leonard) Martynowicz and Kathryn Rapela; and by three brothers, Edward (Esther) Chwalek, Joseph (Virginia) Chwalek and Stanley Chwalek. She is survived by her children, Janice Martynowicz, Kay James, Donna (Richard) Bujeker and Terrance (Alissa) Martynowicz; her only granddaughter, Jill Marie (Don) James-Laudeman; a sister, Jean Rozewicz; sisters-in-law, Angie Chwalek, Gerry Sobecki and Irene Martin; and many nieces and nephews. Sophia was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She loved crocheting, baking and decorating cakes for her family. She enjoyed many good times at the lake with her family and loved ones. She also enjoyed playing cards and her Thursday adventures with her sisters. Their adventures took them to Bonnie Doons and to the Blue Chip on occasion. She was a financial secretary at the P.N.A. Group 1437 and was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, June 3, from 3 to 8 p.m. in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME 824 S. Mayflower Road, South Bend, where a Rosary will be prayed at 4 p.m. A funeral liturgy will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 4, at 10 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend. The family has requested contributions in memory of Sophia be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637. The family wishes to thank Hospice, Mary Lako and Sharron McGowan for the care given to their mother.
