SOUTH BEND - Joan H. Kowalski, 86, passed away on Monday, November 26, 2012, in Bremen Hospital. Joan was born May 28, 1926, in South Bend, to the late Maximillian and Helen (Holewinski) Kowalski. Joan was also preceded in death by her brothers, John, Edward and Roman Kowalski; and sisters, Dorothy Zygulski and Mary Piekarski. Joan is survived by nieces, Barbara Squier and Kathryn Lekarczyk; sister-in-law, Genevieve Kowalski; nephews, David, Patrick, Jim, Paul, Carl, Kevin and Kenneth Kowalski, and Robert Zygulski; niece, Cynthia Rogers; and many cousins. Joan was a member of Unity Church of Peace and always looked forward to Sunday services, where she had many loving friends. Joan graduated from South Bend Catholic High School in 1945. She retired from the University of Notre Dame, and worked part-time at the St. Joseph County Public Library Main Branch until 2006. Joan enjoyed taking walks, reading, and watching her favorite Star Trek episodes. A memorial service will be celebrated on Thursday, December 20, 2012, at 5:30 pm, with visitation from 5:00 until 5:30 pm at Unity Church of Peace, 905 E. Colfax St., South Bend, Indiana, with Reverend Sandie Vanik officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Unity Church of Peace, 905 E. Colfax St., South Bend, Indiana 46617.
