REV. JOHN S. HOSINSKI has labored with indefatigable zeal and joy among several Polish Catholic parishes in Northern Indiana. He is the well-loved pastor of St. Casimirs Parish at Hammond. He was born at South Bend, Indiana, June 23, 1890. His father, Anthony Hosinski, was one of the pioneers of the Polish race in South Bend. He was born in Bydgoszcz, Poland, attended school there and came to America at the age of seventeen, in 1867. Only, a few people of his race had located in South Bend when he went there. For many years he carried on a successful contracting business, retiring at the age of seventy-five, and he died March 11, 1928. He and his wife are buried in the Cedar Grove Cemetery at South Bend. Anthony Hosinski was a man generous in behalf of church and community and contributed to the establishment of all four of the Polish Catholic churches in South Bend He married Roselle Kowalski, who was brought to America at the age of thirteen by her parents, who also located at South Bend, where her father died shortly afterward. Mrs. Roselle Hosinski died April 27, 1928. She and her husband had celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1923. Of their twelve children three died in infancy, and Nicholas died at South Bend in October, 1930. The living children are: Sister Severina, a Sister of the Holy Cross Order, now principals of St. Hedwigs High School at South Bend. Mrs. Stella Piechorowski, of South Bend Johanna Gorka, of South Bend; Mrs. Leocadia Piechorowski, of South Bend; Joseph, assistant postmaster at Cicero, Illinois; William, police captain at South Bend; and Rev. John Stanislaus. John Stanislaus Hosinski attended St. Hodwigs parochial school in South Bend, graduated from Notre Dame University in the high school or preparatory department, and in 1914 completed the work of the Polish Seminary at Orchard Lake, Michigan. He was ordained June 27, 1914, by Bishop Allerding of the Diocese of Fort Wayne. His first assignment was as assistant pastor of St. Casimirs Parish at Hammond. In 1916 he was transferred for missionary duty to Northern Wisconsin, where he labored until April, 1919. At that date he took charge of St. John Cantius Church at Rolling Prairie, Indiana, in July 1925, was made pastor of St. Hyacinths Church at Fort Wayne, and in 1927, on the resignation of Father Siroczynski, succeeded to the pastorate of St. Casimirs Parish at Hammond, whose members gave a loyal welcome to the priest who had endeared himself to the parishioners years before. His first important labor was to carry on the half completed work of constructing the beautiful church building, which is a splendid example of the pure Gothic architecture. The church was completed in 1929, at a total cost of $177,000. Father Hosinski has also during his administration built the parochial school, Parish Hall and Young Men Club, at an additional cost of $85,000. He is a priest who is very much alive to the interests of his community. He is a member of the Hammond Chamber of Commerce, is an honorary member of the Woodmar and Lake Hills Country Clubs and is independent in politics. His hobby is encouraging athletics and wholesome sports among his church people. He is very proud of the parish baseball, basketball, football and bowling teams.
