May 10, 1925 - Dec. 31, 2010
LAKEVILLE - Alex Papczynski passed away at 5:30 a.m. from natural causes on Friday, December 31, 2010 in his home surrounded by his family. Alex was born on May 10, 1925 in South Bend to the late Alex and Genevieve (Wroblewski) Papczynski. He has been a lifelong area resident. He married the love of his life, Mary Strasser on May 28, 1949 in South Bend. Along with his wife, Mary, Alex is survived by his seven children, Sue (Jim) Nelund of Lakeville, Sandra (Mike) Haws of Plymouth, Sharon (the late Mike) Sheely of Lakeville, Daniel (Gail) Papczynski of Lakeville, Paul (Shelley) Papczynski of Lakeville, Don (Glee) Papczynski of Lakeville and Nancy (Jim) Yates of Goshen. Also surviving are twenty one grandchildren, thirty four great grandchildren and his sister, Henrietta Lyman of South Bend. Alex was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother, Evelyn Fischer, Hildegard Grzeskowiak, Delores Wroblewski, Arlene Stetler, and Alfred Papczynski. Alex served his country during World War II as a Marine. He was extremely proud of the time he spent as a Marine fighting for his country. He loved to share his military experiences with his family and friends. Through the years, Alex and Mary enjoyed getting together with the men he fought side by side with and their wives for a yearly reunion. Alex was part of "The Greatest Generation" of men who fought for the freedoms we all share today. Alex worked in construction all of his life. During the 1950's and 1960's, he had his own construction company known as A & D Builders. In March of 1983, Alex and his sons created Papczynski Construction. At age 62, he retired and spent his retirement with his lifelong soul mate, Mary. The two of them enjoyed traveling the United States together, fishing, boating and camping with their friends. Alex had a very compassionate and giving heart. He and Mary would make sure needy children and families had food and gifts at Christmas. He has left wonderful memories for his family to cherish. Although he has been removed from this earth, he will be in our hearts forever. Alex was a wonderful husband of 61 years, a loving father, and a proud grandfather. He will be missed.
