MISHAWAKA - Marion Joseph "Joe" Chmiel, 80, passed away at Caring Junction, Mishawaka. He was born on July 23, 1930 to Joseph Alex and Florence (Packowski) Chmiel. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Chester Chmiel. He was formerly married to Alanna M. (Wood) Chmiel. On June 10, 1979 in Mishawaka, he married the former Nancy Compton; she preceded him in death on October 18, 2007. Surviving are his children, Denise (Steve) Domonkos of South Bend, Dana (Dean) Spaid of South Bend, Stacey (Lindy) Seitz of Nappanee, Rebecca (John) Mackowicz of Mishawaka and Bob Egyhazi of Osceola; a sister Patricia Wolf of Niles, MI and 13 grandchildren, Marisha, Kelsey, Connor and Lexi Egyhazi, Mason, Jared and Seth Mackowicz, Sam (Abby), Ben and Jacob Domonkos, Emilie Spaid, Cameron and Clayton Seitz; nieces, Sandy and Brenda and his mother-in-law, Jo Wise. He owned and operated Chmiel's Barber Shop from 1950 until he retired in 1992. He was an Army Veteran during the Korean War. A member of YMCA, American Turners Club and the American Legion. For many years he spent his summers at Knickerbocker Lake fishing with his wife Nancy. The children, grandchildren and friends have many stories and fond memories of hours spent "up at the lake", fishing from the pontoon boat, campfires, fishing from the pier with the grandkids, driving the golf cart, fishing from the shore with friends, riding bikes around camp and fishing everywhere with Nancy. Joe enjoyed canning pickles, growing tomatoes and most especially he loved the Lord. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-5 p.m., Sunday, March 20 in the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. The services will be held at the New Beginnings Community Fellowship, 19688 Kern Road, South Bend with visitation at 10 a.m. and the funeral at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 21 with Rev. Benjamin Norton officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph PRC Cemetery, South Bend. Memorial donations can be made to New Beginnings Community Fellowship or Immanuel United Methodist Church or Nappanee Missionary Church.
