Mary Mahank Barnes, 96, passed away on Thursday, January 20, 2022 in her residence surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Mishawaka on December 12, 1925, to the late Rene and Laura (Van Paemel) Mahank. She is preceded in death by her husband, George W Barnes; brothers, Charles August and Camiel Mahank; and a sister, Rose Vander Heyden. Mary was a 1943 graduate of Mishawaka High School. She was employed in various positions with 1st Source Bank for 34 years becoming Assistant Vice President & Branch Manager of the Mishawaka branch. Mary was a member of the board of directors of the American Cancer Society for 6 years and served as district financial advisor. She was the treasurer and board member of the Downtown Mishawaka Association and on the board of the National Association of Bank Women and the American Institute of Banking. She was Regent and State Trustee of the Columbian Circle #274, Daughters of Isabella. In 1988, Mary was the receptionist of the Athena Award given to a woman who has worked in Mishawaka providing a valuable service to a business, profession or to the community at that time. The award was sponsored by the South Bend-Mishawaka Area Chamber of Commerce and Killilea Oldsmobile. Mary is survived by her stepson, Barry C. Barnes; nephews, Charles (Peggy) Mahank, David Mahank and Raymond Vander Heyden; nieces, Elainie (Larry) Holmes, Laura Ann Mahank, Sandra (Ken) Roughton, Camille (Dick) Gruen, Mary Priscella (Steve) Csengody and Lauren Wilson; plus many great nieces and nephews.The family would like to thank Heart to Heart Hospice and Home Instead Senior Care for their kind and caring comfort that was provided to Mary. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 am, Friday, January 28th at St. Bavo Catholic Church in Mishawaka with Reverend Jim Bracke CSC and Reverend Pete Pacini CSC officiating. Memorial contributions can be made to St Bavo Catholic Church, 511 W. 7th Street, Mishawaka, IN 46544.
