Vera Christine Monahan, 98, passed away at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2022, at St. Paul’s senior living community. Mrs. Monahan was born on Aug. 26, 1923, in Minneapolis, MN to the late Gustaf and Martha (Carlson) Gustafson. She served in the United States Navy during World War II. On May 28, 1949, Vera and John Edward Monahan were married. Her husband preceded her in death on Dec. 25, 1995. She also was preceded in death by two sisters, one brother and numerous good friends. Mrs. Monahan has been a member of St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church since 1957 when she and her husband moved to South Bend. Mrs. Monahan is survived by her four sons, Mike (Sue) Monahan of South Bend; Tom (Jena) Monahan of Sellersburg, IN; Bill (Jayne) Monahan of South Bend; and Don (Pam) Monahan of Indianapolis, along with six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2022, at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, 2114 E. Jefferson Blvd, South Bend. Interment with military honors will follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to Mass in the church on Saturday. Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, South Bend is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Vera C. Monahan may be made to the Youth Service Bureau of St. Joseph County, 2222 Lincolnway West, South Bend, IN 46613.
