MISHAWAKA, IN - Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Bendit passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, April 15, 2017 at The Hearth at Juday Creek where she was a resident for the past four and a half years. Betty was born on October 16, 1923 in Mishawaka to Harry and Arlie (Gray) Yendes who preceded her in death. She lived most of her life in the Mishawaka and South Bend area until 2012 when she made The Hearth at Juday Creek her home. After she graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1941, she was employed as a Dental Technician at the Hoosier Dental Laboratory in South Bend for 34 years. Betty was a partner in the Hoosier Dental Laboratory when she retired in 1975. After her retirement, she was employed by the University of Notre Dame Hesburgh Library. In 1946, as Betty Yendes, she married Otho Bendit in Mishawaka who preceded her in death in March 2009. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Walter Yendes. She is survived by a daughter, Kathleen Winkel of South Bend, a son, John Bendit (Karen) of Tualatin, Oregon and several nieces, nephews, and many friends. For many years Betty and her husband attended Notre Dame athletic events including both football and basketball games which she continued to enjoy following after she was unable to attend the events. She had a special talent for crafts and especially china painting. which she thoroughly enjoyed with her good friend Irene Schrader. Working as a volunteer for Busy Hands of Michiana, she helped people who are struggling with life's challenges. Betty was also a member of Delta Theta Chi Sorority and a participant in Red Hat Club activities. Attending plays at the Bristol Opera House was a favorite Sunday afternoon pastime in addition to going to garage sales with her friend Ruth. Visiting family and friends, Betty and Otho traveled through out the United States including Hawaii. They also made two extensive trips through out Europe. Betty was especially fond of her three grey and white cats that she had during her lifetime. The family would like to thank the personnel and her friends at The Hearth at Juday Creek for all their help and support during her stay where she liked to participate in such activities such as playing Bingo, Euchre and Bunco. The family would also like to thank her great niece Laurie for her help and companionship over the past many years, all the caregivers from Senior Helpers as well as Pam and others from Great Lakes Caring who all assisted in her care over the past several months. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 19, 2017, from 4-7 pm in Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka, IN. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 20, 2017, at 1 pm in the funeral home with visitation 1 hour prior. Burial will follow in St Joseph Valley Memorial Park.
