In 1888, in the Catholic parish of Gluszyna, Poland, Antonius Szymkowiak, 23, married Catharina Chudzicka, 21. The 1900-1920 census records of South Bend, Indiana, indicate that they and their daughter Katherine immigrated in the early 1890s. The 1900-1910 census records indicate that Katherine had had twelve children of whom eight were living in 1910. Three had died before the 1900 census was taken and the fourth died before the 1910 census. Eight of the children include (in birth order) Katherine, Michael, Mary, Stanislaw/Steve, Otto, Veronica, Antoni, Walter/Valentine, and Casmir.
