BERRIEN SPRINGS - Lester J. "Les" Scherr, aged 86 years, of Old 31 Highway, Berrien Springs, Michigan, died at 4:55 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, 2011, at West Woods of Niles (Michigan) following a brief illness. He was born on August 9, 1924, in Warren, Illinois, to George August and Annie (Boelk) Scherr. He had lived in this area since 1946. He retired after 42 years of service from the Plumbers & Pipe Fitters Union, Local 357; his job sites included the Cook and Palisades Nuclear Plants. He was also co-owner with his wife of Scherr's Antiques. Mr. Scherr was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army. He was a founding member and past president of the Four Flags Fun Followers Chapter of the National Campers and Hikers Association. On July 31, 1949, in South Bend, Indiana, he married the former Gloria C. Polega, who preceded him in death last week on July 16, 2011. He is survived by their sons, Jim Scherr of Anchorage, Alaska, and Pat (Rose) Scherr of Sumnerville, Michigan, and four nephews. In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by his sisters, Elsie Breed and Lucille Breed. Services for Lester J. "Les" Scherr will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 29, 2011, at the graveside at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens in Niles, with Dr. James A. Bennett of Elkhart, Indiana, officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends from 5-7 PM today at the Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles. Contributions in memory of Les may be made to the Arthritis Foundation .
