GRANGER - Louis Gerald Schirano, 75, of Granger died Sunday, October 15th following an illness. Lou was born November 6, 1941 in New York City, NY to the late Lucy (Viggiano) and Louis V. Schirano and had lived in Granger since 2001. On January 13, 1973 in New York City he married Linda M. Kiester, who survives. Also surviving are his two sons, William L.T. Schirano (Katie) of Lorton, VA and John A. Schirano (Rachael) of Bloomington, IL; and eight grandchildren, Lydia, Lillian, James, Elizabeth, Cameron, Charles, Isabella, and Jack Schirano. A proud New Yorker, Lou graduated from Stuyvesant High School in New York City and earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Notre Dame in 1962, and his Legum Magister from New York University in 1964. Following his education, Lou served his nation in Okinawa as a Military Intelligence Officer in the U.S. Army. It was during his tour that he met Linda, and upon their return home, they built a life in New York City. Lou spent most of his life in the banking industry. Over the years it was his creative intellect that helped define the art of the possible for solutions to the debt problems that plagued many developing economies around the world. Away from work, Lou travelled to Cozumel for his beloved annual fishing trip, and was always met with a hero's welcome from friends he had made over the years. Of his personal achievements, his membership in the Notre Dame Class of 1962 was the one of which he was most proud. Over the years, he reveled in planning and organizing reunion events, as well as the brotherhood that came with that honor. Lou served as Class President at the time of his passing. Blessed with a full life and all of the wonderful people he met along the way, Lou remained in total awe of his grandchildren. His greatest joy was being a grandparent alongside his beloved wife to his eight “gooneybirds and heffalumps,” all of whom continue to love him dearly. The family wishes to thank the tenth floor nurses, patient care assistants and the physicians at Memorial Hospital in South Bend for all of their compassion and love. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 24th in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Notre Dame. Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North and Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.
