MISHAWAKA - Lewis Stickovich, 89, of Mishawaka, passed away Monday afternoon, August 17, 2009. Lewis was born September 26, 1919, in Mishawaka, a son of the late Fred and Helen (Milovich) Stickovich. He grew up in Mishawaka and graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1939. On July 29, 1944, Lewis married Goldie Hemphill, and the couple made Mishawaka their home. Lewis went to work at Dodge Manufacturing/Reliance in 1945 and retired as a foreman in the foundry in 1977. Prior to Dodge he was employed at Ball Band and the Studebaker Corporation. Lewis was a member of the Elkhart Moose Lodge, Dodge Retirement Group and the Mishawaka Alumni Association. He enjoyed gardening and yard work, auctions in Goshen, and watching all sports. Lewis especially liked his dinner bets with his daughter on the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals. Lewis' surviving family includes his beloved wife of 65 years, Goldie; a daughter, Sharon Huys of Mishawaka; a son, Fred (Jeanie) Stickovich of Niles; a sister, Katherine Rea of Granger; eight grandchildren, Jacki Huys, Billy (Jala) Huys, Stacey Huys, Stephanie Huys, Freddy (Natasha) Stickovich, Jennifer (Dave) Ricks, Tiffany (Ryan) Desmond and Nick Stickovich; four great-grandchildren, Cheyenne O'Keefe, Sophia Ricks, Zoe Ricks and Jake Desmond, and awaiting the birth of another great-grandchild in February. Lewis was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Stickovich in 2008; three brothers, Joey, Michael and Nick Stickovich; and two sisters, Bertha and Mary Stickovich. Friends may spend time with Lewis' family from 4 - 7 p.m. Thursday in the Thallemer, Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 West Third, Mishawaka. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home, with Pastor Robert Vale officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka. Contributions in Lewis' memory may be made to the Osceola United Methodist Church. Assistance with memorials is available at the funeral home.
