Vincenzo Sgambelluri

South Bend - Vincenzo Sgambelluri, 91, passed away at 11:15 am, Wednesday, January 8, 2014 in Memorial Hospital. Vincenzo was born September 10, 1922 in Siderno Marina to the late Giuseppe and Immaculate Sgambelluri. On December 4, 1948 in Siderno Marina, Italy, Vincenzo married Rosa (Galea)Sgambelluri , she survives along with their children, Joseph (Emilia) Sgambelluri, Maria (Carmin) Martino, Antonio (Maria) Sgambelluri, Cosimo Sgambelluri; grandchildren, Vincenzo Sgambelluri, Rosa (Domenico) Porpiglia Silvio Martino, Connie (Rick) Labelski, Vincenzo Sgambelluri, Rosa (David) Tropeano, Anna Sqambelluri; great-grandchildren, Giuseppe Tropeano, Antonio Tropeano, Antonino Porpigila, Vincenzo Popiglia; sisters, Maria Baranca and Rosa Sgambelluri; and brother, Francesco Sgambelluri; sister-in-law, Immaculate (Nicola) Macri; brother-in-law, Agostino Galea; nieces, Lucia (Enzo) Montanaro, Rosetta (Giovanni) Schirripa; and nephew, Paolo (Jiulia) Barranca; and extended family in Italy. Vincenzo honorably served in the Italian Army during WWII. He was a Prisoner of War who was captured in Stalingrad and spent 3 years and 3 months in the concentration camps in Russia under Stalin. In 1949 he went to Australia, staying there 3 years before returning in 1952 to Italy. He was a generous man who was always concerned with the well-being of others. When he owned his grocery store he would allow customers to shop on credit. They would then pay him at the end of the month. A peaceful man, he would help settle arguments and offer advice. He was always giving to those in need. He is still fondly remembered in Siderno Italy when he would visit. Vincenzo continued to support his hometown by paying for the alter at his church in Italy. His name is inscribed on the alter. In 1956 he then immigrated to Toledo, Ohio and in 1957 he came to South Bend. Vincenzo was employed with the Art Mosaic Tile Company and retired after 40 years of service. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church. Vincenzo enjoyed hunting, gardening, going to Blue Chip Casino and he visited Vegas several times. Vincenzo return to Italy many times to visit friends and family. Above all, he loved being with his family and they cherished their time with him. He will be missed by all who knew him. Visitation for Vincenzo will be 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Sunday, January 12, 2014 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd. A rosary will be prayed at 5:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am Monday, January 13, 2014 at Our Lady of Hungary Church. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. In lieu of contributions to the church, please send requests for a Mass in Vincenzo's name.
