SOUTH BEND - Edward S. Tafelski Sr., 91, passed away at 11:44 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15. Edward was born on Sept. 1, 1916, in South Bend, to the late Stanley and Nettie (Kruszka) Tafelski. On Oct. 21, 1939, he married Mary (Plonski). She passed away on May 29, 2002. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Alex Tafelski. He is survived by his children, Dorothy (Bill Stockton) Grzeskowiak of South Bend, Bernice (James) Niemasik of South Bend, Edward Tafelski Jr. of Mishawaka, and John (Henrietta) Tafelski of South Bend; 12 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and by his brothers and sisters, Clem Tafelski, Ray Tafelski, Daniel Tafelski, Evelyn Kazmierzak and Veronica Kusmiez, all of South Bend. Edward served his country with the United States Air Force. He retired in 1986 after 44 years of service at RACO and was an avid Notre Dame fan. He was a member of St. Adalbert Catholic Church. He also worked there by locking and unlocking the church doors. On Saturday, Dec. 15, he locked the doors for his last time.
