She attended New Carlisle High School, and was a member of the marching band as a trumpet player, lettering for several years. At the same time, she was a member of a Junior Symphony Orchestra as a violin player. She graduated from New Carlisle High School in 1947. Lillian could illustrate a machine with every part, including each nut, bolt and washer, their location on the machine, as well as how to reassemble it. Lillian was given a job with the Whirlpool Corporation in LaPorte, IN and worked there for twenty years. Then she became a freelance mechanical illustrator for 10 years during which time she studied for her pilot's license, having soloed several times. During her career she was commissioned to do several works of art. Lillian then worked for Utilimaster of Wakarusa, IN for 12 years until she retired in 1999 at the age of 70. Lillian loved steam trains and tractors, being well-known for her artist renditions of these. One of her favorite yearly events was the steam show sponsored by the LaPorte Historical Steam Society in Heston, IN. Yes, mother was a bit of a gear head. She loved to write stories, several of which appeared in the South Bend Tribune.
