Josefa, Josepha, Josephine Grabarz Drajer (abt 1872-1906)
The Wincenty and Magdalena Grabarz family emmigrated from Prussia in 1870 to South Bend, IN. Josephine probably was the first child born in the new country, listed as Joseph, 7, in the 1880 census. (In the 1880 census, the family was listed under the surname Grawertski.) Josephine had a daughter Angela, also known as Nellie, in June of 1892. On May 25, 1898, Josephine, daughter of Wincenty Grabarz, married Valentine, son of Joannes Drajer, at St. Hedwig Catholic Church. Valentine was also known as Walenty. Their 1900 census household included daughter Angela and son Alojzy, also known as Alex, who had been born March, 1899. A St. Casimer Catholic Church interment record adds Casimir, son of Valentine Drajer, who died Sep. 7, 1901 at the age of eight months. The 1910 census indicates they had two more sons, Sigfried born about 1902, and Leonard born about 1904.The WPA, Indiana, Index to Death Records and the St. Hedwig Catholic Church interment records both say that Josephine Drajer died June 4, 1906 at the age of 34, indicating that she had been born 1871-1872. The church records add that she died of dropsy and was interred in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
