Feb. 24, 1914 - Feb. 10, 2011
SOUTH BEND - Daniel F. Kalczynski, 96, of New York City, died Thursday evening, February 10, 2011 of natural causes. Born February 24, 1914, in South Bend, IN, he was a "New Yorker" for over 60 years! After graduating from Notre Dame University in 1936 with a Bachelor of Arts, Daniel entered the world of banking and finance, with his first job at First Bank & Trust Co., South Bend, IN. His career interrupted by W.W.II, Daniel entered Great Lakes Naval Training Station in 1942. Upon completion of basic and officer training in December 1942, Daniel was commissioned Lieutenant Commander and saw action in the Pacific Theatre aboard the U.S.S. Essex, (CV9), with Carrier Groups of the 3rd and 5th Fleets until 1946. Daniel was awarded the America Theatre Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon 7 Stars, World War II Victory Ribbon and the Philippines Liberation 2 Stars. After the War, Daniel continued his service in the U.S. Naval Reserve and was appointed Commander in 1960. After the War, Daniel returned to the banking and finance and became a Registered Securities Representative spanning a banking and finance career for over 40 years, eventually retiring from Shearson-Lehman American Express in New York City in the late 70's. Some of Daniel's greatest pleasures included a yearly subscription to George Balanchine's NYC Ballet at Lincoln Center, classical music, his volunteer board work with the Advisory Panel of the International Violin Competition of Indiana, Broadway theatre, cooking and dinner parties with friends and family, travelling to Paris, Florence and other European capitals and summers at the seashore in his Hamptons Home at 4 Lee Lane, Wainscott with his late life-partner Jamie Bolster who pre-deceased Daniel in 1974. Dan was above all else, a Gentleman, a man of Integrity and Compassion, whose quiet and unheralded dedication brought Joy and Unconditional Love to those lives he touched. A memorial Mass for Daniel will be celebrated by his cousin, the Reverend Leonard F. Chrobot, O.P., to be held at 11 a.m. on February 22, 2011, at Saint Hedwig's Roman Catholic Church, 331 Scott Street, South Bend, IN. Daniel's remains are to be interned in St. Joseph's Polish R.C. Cemetery in St. Joseph County, IN.
