MISHAWAKA - Wanda A. Haines, 89, passed away Wednesday, October 2, 2013, at Sprenger Health Care, Mishawaka, IN. Wanda was born on April 18, 1924, in South Bend, IN, to Konstanty & Zofia (Monczko) Cierniak. In 1951 she married Leo J. Haines, who preceded her in death in 1992. She lived in South Bend for 48 years. She was an avid fan of Notre Dame football and women's basketball throughout her life. During World War II she served as a nurse's aide in both area hospitals. She loved music and the arts. While in South Bend she was active in numerous civic and social service organizations, among them the South Bend Symphony and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. She lived in Moorestown, NJ, and Barrington, IL. She returned to her hometown of South Bend after her husband passed. Wanda was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Cierniak, and a sister, Jeanette (Jane) Nate. She is survived by her son, Eric (Catherine) Haines of Boston; grandsons, Ryan and Evan Haines; a sister, Helen (Pablo) Eisenberg of Washington, D.C.; and nieces, Kathy Nate and Marina Eisenberg. Memorial contributions may be made to the South Bend Symphony, St. Vincent de Paul, or to the Notre Dame Scholarship Fund. Visitation will begin at 11 am Saturday at Welsheimer Family Funeral Home at 521 N. William St., followed by a service at 12 noon.
