Thomas J. Nate
Mar. 1, 1920 - Dec. 12, 2010
SOUTH BEND - Thomas J. Nate, 90, passed away at 8:50 am on Sunday, December 12, 2010 in Heathwin Specialized Care. Thomas was born on March 1, 1920 in South Bend to the late Louis and Mary (Ferraro) Nate. Thomas was also preceded in death by brothers, George, John, Joseph, and Samuel; and sisters, Helen, Annie, and Yolanda. On March 2, 1946, Thomas married Jeanette P. (Cierniak). She survives along with daughter, Kathleen Nate. Tom, winner of the 1944 Golden Gloves National Flyweight Championship fought in Madison Squar Garden, is the youngest of the boxing Nate clan. He along with brother John co-sponsored and promoted numerous boxing events in our area many of which were benefit shows. He was a pioneer in promoting female boxing and an assistant coach to the Lady's World Champion Phyllis Kugler (McCormick) a former local resident. He was one of the four founders of the American Boxing Club previously located at 114 South Michigan Street. Boxing back then is what football is today. Everybody knew "Tommy Nate". Tomas worked at Bendix and retired from The South Bend Water Works at which time he was issued a Key to the City from Mayor Parent for outstanding citizenship. He was loyal to the Democratic Party and a fan of Notre Dame sports. He enjoyed thoroughbred racing and took pride in cooking for others as he delighted in Italian Cuisine. He devoted his life to taking care of his family and showered those in need with compassion, a guardian angel to a countless number of people. He adored his dog Buffie of 13 years who went everywhere with him. His daughter Kathy will remember him as the brightest star in her life whose light will shine forever in the hearts of those who knew him. At this time there will be no funeral services. Entombment will take place in Resurrection Garden Mausoleum in St. Joseph Cemetery. ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME 824 S. Mayflower Rd is assisting the family. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Humane Society of St. Joseph County 2506 Grape Rd Mishawaka, IN 46545. Condolences for the family may be made at www.sjfh.net.
