Sophia M. Cummins, 84, of LaPorte, IN, passed away on Wednesday, September 20, 2000 at LaPorte Hospital. Born Nov. 18, 1915 to the late Henry and Maria (Lizak) Hynek. Married Nov. 27, 1937 in LaPorte to Russell C. Cummins, who preceded her in death May 4, 1996. Survived by two daughters: Kathryn Lawson of Oklahoma City, OK and Carol Grott of Union Mills, IN; two sons: Ronald Cummins of Elkridge, Maryland and Charles Cummins of Michigan City, IN; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; three sisters: Julia Beehler of LaPorte, IN, Frances Kazmierczak of South Bend, IN and Kay Zarr of Prescott Valley, AZ; one brother, Ray Hynek of LaPorte, IN; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by parents, husband, one sister, Ann Patterson; two brothers, Joseph and Henry Hynek, and granddaughter, Carol Moody.
Funeral services Saturday September 23, 2000, 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church, La Porte, IN, Rev. Ted Nordquist officiating. Visitation Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. (with a Wake Service at 7 p.m.), and on Saturday from 9 to 10:15 a.m. at the Essling Funeral Home, 1117 Indiana Ave., LaPorte, IN 46350. Burial, Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte, IN. Contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic School. Mrs. Cummins was an area resident her entire lifetime. She was a homemaker, a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and was an avid gardener. (219) 362-2722.
