Came to USA in 1881 to rejoin her family who were already here. SBd Tribune: "First Polish Nun to teach in City. Dies at age 86 in her room at St Mary's infirmary shortly after receiving communion at 7 a.m. She left St Hedwig parochial school in Aug 1936 after 52 yrs as a teach & Mother Superior. Services at Our Lady of Loretto Chapel. Entered Novitiate in 1883. Surviving: 2 nephews, Francis Aftowski & Frances Kosnowski of SBd. A grandniece, Sr M Rose Magdalen, CSC of Peoria Ill & several other relatives.

Nat Intent Vol 19 p 133, filed 7 Sept 1920; dated 23 Nov 1922; teacher; 303 S Taylor. Emigrated port of Bremen 28 Mar 1881; arrived port of NY 10 Apr 1881. In 1892 Sr Hedwige organized young girls & became the first active directress of the Children of Mary Sodality she organized in St Hedwig's parish. In 2906 she was the co-organizer of the name of Mary Sodality & had served as directress for many years. She was exceptionally devoted as a lover of flowers to the decorating of the altar & sanctuary of St Hedwig's church for a long period of time. It was said that she never spoke ill of anyone.
