INDEX

[N31172] Carolyn A. (Balough) Colwell
February 7, 1943 ~ January 22, 2022 (age 78)

Carolyn A. Colwell, 78, passed away at 6:20pm Saturday, January 22, 2022, in Granger. She was a lifelong resident of South Bend. Carolyn was an avid tennis player, participating in several leagues at the South Bend Racquet Club, Leeper Park, Knollwood and Castle Point. Her left-handed forehand and relentless back court play were her strengths, as her brother can attest after suffering a fractured ankle during a match with her. Carolyn was born on February 7, 1943, in South Bend to Rudolph and Mary (Riba) CCC. She attended Our Lady of Hungary and Riley High School. She was a St. Mary’s College graduate, which made her a devoted Notre Dame fan whose shouts of “Get ‘em!” rang out when ND was on defense. However, her cheers for Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts were not appreciated by her Chicago Bears-loving sons. Carolyn loved taking care of her cats, reading the latest bestsellers, and going to movies. She had an eye for fashion and was always on the lookout for anything purple, but her best accessory was her beautiful smile. She retired from Liberty Mutual and also had been employed by Torrington. She was the former wife of Jack Colwell, political columnist for the South Bend Tribune. Carolyn and Jack found they were better as friends rather than as spouses. Surviving are two sons Stephen (Jennifer) Colwell of Dayton, Ohio, and Marc Colwell of Chicago, two grandchildren Claire Colwell and Quinn Colwell, a brother Richard (Cheryl) Balough of Chicago and her former husband Jack. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Zahoran Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Pet Refuge, Inc. in South Bend. To leave an online condolence, please visit our website at www.zahoran.com or our Facebook page, Zahoran Funeral Home.
