MISHAWAKA, IN - Sonja Sue Schmidt, 81, passed away with family at her side after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born in Ages, Kentucky, to Romeo and Wilma (Goodin) Fiorini on July 21, 1939. On October 1, 1955, she married James Rigdon. Together they had four children, Neal Rigdon, who passed as an infant, Debra Buford of Mishawaka, Janet Russell of Rochester, and Kevin Rigdon (Alicia) of Holly Hills, FL. After separating from James, she married Russell Schmidt on July 20, 1985. During her life, she had various jobs, but her greatest role was as caregiver, always proudly speaking about her family. A devout Catholic, she attended services at Holy Family Church in South Bend. She was most happy working in the yard of her home or polka dancing. Aside from her son and parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Romeo “Junior” Fiorini Jr., Robert “Bob” Fiorini, and Ron Fiorini; both husbands; partner, Robert “Bob” Jankowski, and numerous furry companions. Sonja is lovingly remembered by her kids; grandchildren, David, Nikki, Matt, Joe, Koty, Kailyn, Antonio and, Stephanie; and great-grandchildren, Ethan, Brian, and Preston. A celebration of Sonja's life is planned for a later date. Hahn Funeral Home has been entrusted with handling the arrangements. Contributions in her memory may be made to Black Pine Animal Sanctuary, 1426 W 300 N, Albion, IN 46701. Published in South Bend Tribune on Dec. 16, 2020.
