In 1878, in Poland, Jacob Tobolski, 24, married Marianna Witucki, 22. (Poznan Marriage Indexing Project)
On Oct. 2, 1881, Marianne Tobolski, 24, from Prussia, arrived at the port of Baltimore on board the S. S. Koln. She was on her way to South Bend, Indiana. (passenger list) Jacob Tobolski, born 1854 in Germany, had arrived at the port of New York on Apr. 28, 1881. He was naturalized at the Cook Co., Illinois Circuit Court on Oct. 13, 1888. (naturalization record, familysearch.org) According to the records of St. Hedwig Catholic Church in South Bend, Indiana, Jacob Tobolski died of consumption on Mar. 16, 1890 at the age of 35 years and was interred in Cedar Grove Cemetery. (If the year in the church record is correct, then the year of death inscribed on his gravestone is incorrect.) The 1900 census of South Bend, Indiana indicates that Mary Tobolski, a widow, 44, born in Poland, immigrated in 1881, and had six children of whom five were living, Her five children were living at home (in birth order): Michael, Mary, Valentine (aka William), Wldayslawa, and Ludwika. All five children had been born in Indiana. By the time of the 1910 census of South Bend, only her son Walenty (aka William) was living at home. At the time of the 1920 census of South Bend, Mary Tobolski was living with her son-in-law, Joseph Janowczyk, then a widower, and his five children. The 1930 census of South Bend lists Mary Tobolski, a widow, 70, born in Poland, living with her son-in-law, Joseph Szumski, his wife Lottie aka Wladyslawa, and their children. In 1942, Mary Tobolski died at the Logansport State Hospital in Cass County, Indiana. Her date and place of death are given in her Indiana death certificate with the information drawn from hospital records which indicated that she was 88, the widow of Jacob Tobolski, had been born in Poland to Victor & Agnes (Ranke) Witucki, that her usual address was R. R. #3, Pine Road, South Bend, Indiana, and that she had been at the hospital since December 1938.
