[N16326] Nicholas Ferraro
July 19, 1919 - Mar. 05, 2017

SOUTH BEND - Nicholas Ferraro, 97, passed away peacefully at Brookdale of South Bend on SR 23 & Douglas, where he had been living the past several years. He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years Rosemary “Rose” (Mazzone) Ferraro of South Bend. Also left to cherish their wonderful memories of Nick are his two daughters: Josephine “Josie” (Thomas) Goepfrich and Rose (Rick) Lord both of South Bend along with four adoring grandchildren: Lisa Goepfrich (Billy Wunsch), David Lord, Michael Goepfrich (Ashley), and Megan Roberts (Nick). Nick is also survived by his siblings: Theresa Caruso of New York, Clara Mitchell and Pat Ferraro (June), and sister-in-law Betty Ferraro all of South Bend. He was preceded in death by his brother, Louis Ferraro. As a barber at the longtime South Bend landmark Rocco's Barber Shop, a family run business that continues today, Nick cut the hair of multiple generations of many area families as well as Notre Dame coaches, players, students, professors, staff and VIPs for 61 years. It was the relationships with that he established with his customers that Nick cherished most. He never let a child down if he was asked to attend a sporting event, school function, or family gathering. He was a proud WW II Army Veteran and a member of the Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council 553. An avid fisherman, Nick could often be heard at the shop telling “fish stories” about his weekend excursions up at his lake cottage. He took up golf in his later years, and could be found on the course with his buddies most days. One of the greatest joys in his life was watching his grandchildren participate in sports. He could always be found sitting in the stands, cheering at soccer, baseball, and basketball games. The family would like to thank the staff at Brookdale of South Bend for the wonderful care and respect they showed to Nick. Friends may call at McGann Hay Funeral Home, University Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Rd., near Ironwood on Wednesday from 4-7pm, where a parish rosary will be prayed at 4pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:00am at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church where he was a long time member, Rev. David Rupert, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Memorial donations in Nick's memory may be made in lieu of flowers to St. Anthony de Padua School of South Bend where his grandchildren attended.
