Hilton D. Weesner, age 79, of Greenview Avenue in South Bend, passed away at 5:55 a.m., October 6, 2001, at Hospice House of St. Joseph County of natural causes. Mr. Weesner was born January 8, 1922 to Russell and Edith (McMillan) Weesner in Marion, Indiana. On November 22, 1947 Mr. Weesner married the former Dorothy Stajkowski at the St. Casimer Catholic Church in South Bend. She survives. Also surviving is their daughter, Sharon "Shari" McGovern of South Bend; three brothers, Dwight (Cecilia) Weesner of Phoenix, Arizona, Keith (Denise) Weesner of Birch Lake, Michigan, and Larry (Ruth) Weesner of South Bend. Also surviving are six sisters, Geanne Spagnola of Bradenton, Florida, Alma (Lawrence) Turner of Houston, Texas, Ina Margaret Chearhart of South Bend, Noreen Webb and Shirley Lanoo, both of Mishawaka, and Nancy (Delbert) Green of Osceola, along with several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today, October 8, 2001 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Osceola. Services will be held at 12 p.m. Tuesday, October 9, 2001 in Chapel Hill Funeral Home with interment to follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Mr. Weesner served in the Army Air Corps during W.W. II. He was a fighter pilot and was held as a POW from 1944-1945 in a Japanese camp in Rangoon. When he was released, he was honorably discharged and received the Air Medal, and a Purple Heart. Mr. Weesner was a 1956 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. He was employed by Indiana Bell for many years as an Electrical Engineering Manager before his retirement in 1980. Mr. Weesner was also involved as a member of the American Legion Post 357 in South Bend. Memorial donations in his name may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County or the donor's choice.
