Henry H. Zupke, 71, of 406 South Portage Street, Buchanan, died at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at his home following an extended illness. Mr. Zupke was born Oct. 8, 1892, in Royalton Township and lived in Berrien County his entire life. He married the former Ruth May Herman of Buchanan Sept. 27, 1919, in St. Joseph. He was employed as a butter and cheese maker by Wilson's Dairy for many years and later worked as the Buchanan school custodian. He was a veteran of World War I. He was a member of Ralph Rumbaugh Post 51 of the American Legion and served as post commander from 1938 through 1940. He was also a member of Four Flags Barracks 1093 and Veterans of World War I. He belonged to the First Methodist Church of Buchanan. Besides his widow, survivors include two sons, Lawrence of Kalamazoo and George of Buchanan; a daughter, Mrs. Jack (Mary Louise) Hess of Buchanan; a brother, Emil of Berrien Springs, five sisters, Mrs. Emma Zilke of Berrien Springs; Mrs. Bertha Witkowske and Mrs. Hattie Rimeland, both of St. Joseph, and Mrs. Elsie Katowich and Mrs. Edna Mead, both of Benton Harbor; and eight grandchildren. Another son, James, was killed in World War II while serving in the Navy. Funeral services will be held Friday at 3:30 p.m. in the Swem Funeral Home. Rev. Dale B. Ward, pastor of the Buchanan First Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 51.
