SOUTH BEND - Eugene R. "Greenie" Zielinski, 78, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 7:10 a.m. Tuesday, October 8, 2013, in his home following an illness. Gene was born on November 15, 1934, to the late John and Mary (Gruza) Zielinski in South Bend, IN, and was a lifelong resident. Along with his parents, three sisters and five brothers also preceded him in death. Gene received an appointment as a Rural Letter Carrier from Congressman John Brademas. He retired in 1989 from the U.S. Postal Service after 33 years. On May 14, 1955, he married Virginia L. Gorski at Holy Family Catholic Church in South Bend, IN. Gene is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Virginia L. Zielinski of South Bend, IN; three sons, Keith (Sandra) Zielinski of South Bend, IN, Kenneth (Angie) Zielinski of LaPorte, IN, Lawrence (Rose) Zielinski of South Bend, IN; seven grandchildren, Zachary (fianc©be Karolina Paszek) Zielinski, Courtney (Joseph) Keane, Ashley Zielinski, Kenny Zielinski, Joey Zielinski, Joel (Meghan) Matheny and Adam Matheny; three sisters-in-law; and several nieces & nephews. Gene was a member of Holy Family Parish, where he served as an usher and lector. He enjoyed coaching youth sports. Gene was a diehard Chicago Cubs fan and was passionate about Notre Dame sports. He enjoyed playing golf with his cronies during retirement. Gene was devoted to his family and always put them first. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Thursday, October 10, 2013, at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 11, 2013, at Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
