SOUTH BEND - Chester C. Stepniewski, 85, passed away peacefully at 1:15 pm on Friday, January 13, 2012, in his home. Chester was born on May 20, 1926, in South Bend, to the late Stanley and Clementine (Walowski) Stepniewski. Chester was also preceded in death by brothers, Mitchell, Jerome and Donald. Chester is survived by sisters, Mary Ann Karnafel and Carol Lee (Charles Danny) Vanatta of South Bend; brother, Sigmund (Kathleen) Stepniewski of Tampa, FL; many nieces and nephews; and by his caregiver, Jim Bregenzer. Chester honorably served his country in the United States Army and was a member of American Legion Post 357. He retired from the Bendix Corporation after 40 years of service. For many years he managed and bartended at the Westside Democratic Club, played cards with friends and, most of all, loved his dogs. He had an extraordinary wit. He had a unique sense of humor that he shared with everyone. He loved spending time with his nieces and nephews. He was a Notre Dame and Chicago Cubs fan. Visitation will be from 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Wednesday, January 18, 2012, in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, South Bend, where a funeral liturgy will begin at 11:00 am in the funeral home. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
