Mrs. Sophie Joan Wozniak, 105, of 502 E. Lincoln Way, LaPorte, died Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006, at 10:45 a.m. at LaPorte Hospital following a brief illness. She was born Feb. 17, 1900, in Austria/Poland to Joseph and Anna (Bayer) Urbanick, and had lived in LaPorte since 1920, coming from Chicago. Mrs. Wozniak was a seamstress and had previously worked at Angelo Bernacchi Greenhouses. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She raised seven stepchildren. On Jan. 16, 1954, in LaPorte, she married Frank S. Wozniak, who died Dec. 2, 1982. Also preceding her in death were her parents; her son Carl Conjalka, recently; a stepson, John Conjalka; and a grandson, Karl John Conjalka. Surviving are one daughter, Joan S. (James) Wozniak of Rolling Prairie; one son, Rudolph (Janet) Conjalka of LaPorte; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandsons. The funeral Mass will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, LaPorte, with Rev. Ian Williams officiating. Friends may call at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, today from 4 to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 5 p.m., and Saturday from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 130 Bach St., LaPorte, IN 46350.
