Jan. 30, 1931 - Sept. 30, 2013 SOUTH BEND - Eugene "Pete" W. Chmiel, 82, passed away Monday, September 30, 2013, at Bethlehem Woods Rehab Center in Fort Wayne. Born in South Bend, Eugene married Barbara Redcki May 4, 1957, graduated from Indiana Tech in 1959, and worked for AEP 30 years, retiring in 1993 as a Supervisor of Metering. He was a Korean War Navy veteran, a former member of American Legion Post 47, and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church where he volunteered at the soup kitchen and the Matthew 25 Clinic. Surviving are his loving wife of 56 years, Barbara R. (Radecki) Chmiel of Fort Wayne; sons, Edward J. Chmiel and David M. (Liz) Chmiel, both of Fort Wayne; daughter, Paula M. (Devin) Chmiel-Brock of Naples, FL; grandchildren, Vanessa Watkins, Alexander and Zoe Chmiel; great-grandson, Johnathan Watkins. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Edna Chmiel, and sister, Elaine Guentert. Mass of Christian Burial is 11:00 am Saturday, October 5, 2013, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1101 S. Lafayette, with calling one hour prior. Calling also at the church Friday, October 4, 2013, 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary's Soup Kitchen or the Matthew 25 Clinic.
