Edwin J. Gaski, 89, born April 10, 1910 in Whiting, IN, beloved husband of Jane Kindberg Gaski and father of John F. Gaski, and a nearly life-long resident of Northwest Indiana (East Chicago, Gary, Crown Point), passed away on February 1, 2000 at his home in South Bend after courageously battling several grave illnesses over the past eleven years. Mr. Gaski was predeceased by parents Julia (Klosek) and John Gaski, and by siblings Walter (Harry) Gaski, Wanda Scott, and Leo Gaski; he is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jane, and son, John, age 51, Associate Professor of Marketing at the University of Notre Dame. Edwin Gaski, after attending Ohio State University, was employed by U.S. Steel Corporation and its American Bridge division, in Gary and Chicago, for 43 years. A structural engineer for most of his career, his first major project was the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge; the Sears Tower in Chicago was his last before retirement in 1975. Notably, in the mid-1960's, he was structural designer of the famous Picasso statue located in downtown Chicago's Civic Center Plaza. Working alone from only a snapshot of the original, Mr. Gaski did the complete structural design for the renowned 50-foot, 162-ton steel sculpture. (Any blame for the statue's aesthetics lies with the artist, Pablo Picasso, not Mr. Gaski.) An avid and expert amateur golfer, Ed Gaski was a member of Youche Country Club in Crown Point for four decades, as well as the former Gary C.C. His golf achievements included the Youche Club Championship in 1957 and course record score (six under-par 30 for the nine-hole course) in 1963, two holes-in-one, and the long-term maintenance of a low single-digit handicap (as low as 2 and 3). On two occasions, Mr. Gaski accomplished the very rare golf feat of shooting his age for an 18-hole round (70 and 72). Edwin Gaski had been president of the Crown Point Civic Club (1963), was a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, served as a volunteer usher at his parish church (St.Mary of Crown Point) for many years, and is a major benefactor to the University of Notre Dame through establishment of the endowed Edwin J., Jane R., and John F. Gaski Scholarship Fund. A memorial mass honoring the life of Edwin J. Gaski will be held at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, 321 E. Joliet St., Crown Point, IN at 11 A.M. on Saturday, February 12. Memorial donations may be made to the Ara Parseghian Medical Research Foundation, 1760 E. River Road, Suite 115, Tucson, AZ 85718.

Burial: Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame, St. Joseph, IN
Plot: Section K, row 30, lot 235
